Reglan Symptoms
Reglan Side Effects
There are a number of potentially fatal side effects associated with taking the drug Reglan®. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns Reglan can cause serious and potentially fatal side effects, including body and muscle control disorders, emotional ramifications, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS).
Some of the known Reglan side effects are as follows:
Body and Muscle Control Disorders
Abnormal muscle movements, uncontrolled spasms of your face and neck muscles, or muscles of your body, arms, and legs (dystonia), are all potential side effect of taking Reglan. These muscle spasms can cause abnormal movements and body positions, and usually start within the first two days of treatment. These spasms happen more often in children and adults under age 30.
Emotional Ramifications
After taking Reglan, some people have experienced depression, thoughts about suicide, and some people who take Reglan have ended their own lives. If you have taken the drug Reglan and experience thoughts about hurting or killing yourself, please seek immediate help.
Susceptibility to Syndromes
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and Parkinsonism are rare but very serious conditions that can result from Reglan use. NMS can be fatal and must be treated in a hospital. Symptoms of NMS include high fever, increased sweating, problems thinking, stiff muscles, and very fast or uneven heartbeat. People suffering from Parkinsonism, a group of neurological disorders with symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease, can experience symptoms such as, body stiffness, unsteady balance, slight shaking, and trouble moving.
Black Box Warning
After Reglan was linked to the severe and life-altering neurological condition tardive dyskinesia, the government required Reglan labeling to feature a “black box” warning. Black box warnings are only used when a drug carries a significant risk of serious or life-threatening side effects.
